Vladimir Kramnik Denies Misconduct in Death of American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky

Vladimir Kramnik has broken his silence after the death of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, calling the 29-year-old's demise as a tragedy while accusing critics for mounting what he termed an "unprecedentedly cynical and illegal campaign of harassment" against him and his loved ones.

Kramnik's Statement

The 50-year-old ex-champion, who has faced broad criticism for accusing Naroditsky of digital foul play without evidence, expressed condolences but denied any personal attacks.

"Despite the tensions, I was the sole individual in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, publicly called for him to get assistance," Kramnik stated. "The ensuing efforts, immediately following his passing, to directly link this tragic event to my name … violate every limit of basic human morality."

Kramnik asserted his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's digital games had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and stated he would provide material to "any relevant authority". He noted his lawyers were drafting legal actions over "false accusations" that have led to threats against him and his family.

Police Findings

The death of Naroditsky may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being investigated as a possible suicide, based on a law enforcement document released Thursday. A statement from Charlotte authorities indicates Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Death/suicide/overdose/Sudden/Natural Death Investigation."

"On Sunday October 19th at approximately 07:11pm, officers responded to an emergency medical request in the vicinity of Colin Crossing," the document states. "When they reached the scene, an unresponsive subject was found and later declared dead by a medic."

Community Reaction

Anger over Kramnik's behavior has dominated the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura described his actions "appalling", while five-time world champion Carlsen described it as "terrible". Indian grandmaster Nihal Sarin, who faced Naroditsky in his final online match, blamed Kramnik for "causing a death", saying his vigilante campaign against suspected cheaters was ineffective and "completely unacceptable".

Grandmaster's Impact

A Stanford-educated prodigy and ex-youth titleholder, Naroditsky amassed over 800,000 followers on Twitch and YouTube. Known as Danya, he was celebrated for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a leading voice in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also one of the world's finest players under rapid formats, placing ninth at last year's speed chess title event in New York.

Naroditsky consistently denied the accusations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his psychological well-being. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people suspect foul play," Naroditsky said in his last online broadcast.

Official Responses

The International Chess Federation (Fide) announced recently it was "looking into" Kramnik's behavior. "The way Kramnik approaches it simply can't be accepted," Fide chief executive Sutovsky commented. The organization plans to honor Naroditsky with a memorial award.

Federation president Dvorkovich later verified that all of Kramnik's public statements about Naroditsky, before and after his death, would be referred to the organisation's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission "for independent consideration".

"Human life and dignity are fundamental values shared by all of us," Dvorkovich stressed. "Our global chess family has always valued the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such stature brings a responsibility to maintain the standards of equity and consideration."

Loved Ones' Wish

Naroditsky's family have said they wish he is remembered not for the hostility he endured but for "the happiness and motivation he brought people every day". Magnus Carlsen called him "an asset to chess", while Nakamura described him as "among the finest".
